Tax Filing Deadline Extended to April 18

April 15 falls on a Friday this year.  You might think that this means that your tax return will be due that day.  However, you actually have until Monday, April 18, 2011 to file your 2010 individual income tax return.  The delayed filing is a result of Emancipation Day, a little-known Washington, D.C., holiday that celebrates the freeing of slaves in the district.

Emancipation Day falls on Saturday, April 16, but it is observed in D.C. on Friday, April 15. That prompted the IRS to extend the tax filing deadline to April 18 this year. Under the tax code, filing deadlines can't fall on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays.

2010 Pennsylvania individual income tax returns will also be due on April 18.  However, Pennsylvania estimated tax payments due for the first quarter of 2010 remain due on Friday, April 15, 2011.
