Alpern Rosenthal Speaks to National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts

(PITTSBURGH, PA) – Alpern Rosenthal’s Brandon Otis, manager in the Business Valuation and Litigation Support Group, recently spoke to the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts on a Current Update in Valuation. The focus was on case law updates, industry standards, and normalizing financial statements.

The State Case Law Update included hot-button issues that define the manner in which valuations at both the state and federal level are prepared. Topics included the convergence of court rulings, across jurisdictions, relating to the valuation and division of goodwill (enterprise vs. personal), as well as interpreting the standard of value in marital dissolution cases.

The Industry Standards discussion was an update on changes to professional and industry standards, how the standards have been simplified, how these changes will affect a valuation practice, and the calculation of value vs. conclusion of value.

A discussion on Normalizing Financial Statements brought up the challenges that valuators face in normalizing financial statements, where the industry is heading in providing support for compensation, built-in capital gains tax, and enterprise v. personal goodwill.
