"Marcellus Shale...Where are we now?"
By Joe Mainiero, Senior Manager
June 27, 2011
On Tuesday June 21, 2011, Alpern Rosenthal hosted an energy seminar titled “Marcellus Shale…Where are we now” focusing on shale gas development, the latest energy policies, sustainability and the interplay between these issues. This seminar was a follow up to 2010 seminar titled “How You Can Benefit from the Marcellus Shale Industry” directed at those businesses trying to become more involved in the industry.
The Marcellus Shale has been the topic of much discussion since the first well was drilled in 2005. As of January 2011, approximately 6,000 permits have been issued and more than 3,100 wells have been drilled.
John Hanger, Special Counsel for Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott, LLC and Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection from 2008 through 2011, was the keynote speaker. John is a nationally recognized expert on environment, energy, gas drilling and green economy issues who has unique experience in government and in the private sector. He provided his perspective on differentiating fact from fiction as it relates to the environmental concerns around the drilling and extraction process.
Bill Flanagan, Executive Vice President-Corporate Relations for the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, was the moderator for the event which also welcomed a panel of representatives from Consol Energy/CNX Gas, EQT Corporation, and Alex E. Paris Contracting Company, Inc. The panelist each prepared a brief presentation which focused on various topics including environment protection, regulatory issues, safety, recruiting and staffing, energy trends and economic development. Upon completion of the presentations, the panelist answered question from the audience.
The seminar was followed by a networking opportunity for those in attendance at the event.
